Legislative Initiatives

I Am My Hair: How Black Hair Defines Who We Are

The Legislative Committee is pleased to announce the ‘I Am My Hair Symposium’.  This symposium will take a journey through the black hair experience while answering a question unique to us: How am I defined by my hair?  Invited speakers (political officials, attorneys and judges) will discuss the Crown Act, current cases, and litigation that specifically address the African-American experience Legislative.  Other speakers (business professionals) will discuss how black hair products are a billion-dollar industry, our buying power and opportunities for entrepreneurship.  A mental health provider will discuss the beauty of our natural hair and how to LOVE and embrace it.  To further encourage this, African-American hair professionals will be in attendance to host hair-care workshops providing instruction, techniques and product suggestions for maintenance and care. From little girls learning how to braid, to our little boys learning how to give a haircut, this symposium will have something for every age group. Following the hair tutorials/demonstrations, the children and teens will complete brief video-taped interviews to recap their experience, capturing how they feel about their hair and self-image.

Organizers will seek to partner with black hair care companies for donations to provide ‘swag’ bags for event participants. We hope that everyone leaves with a spirt of civic engagement, positive self-image and the tips and tools to help them LOVE their natural hair!
